CMM 2 – Programming

Building on foundational skills, this course covers advanced CMM programming, complex part inspection strategies, and integration of CMM data with quality systems. Students will explore multi-axis probing techniques, fixture design considerations, and software applications for dimensional analysis and reporting. Focus is on optimizing measurement efficiency and accuracy for production environments.

    • Deep dive into complex GD&T symbols and feature control frames
    • Interpreting profile tolerances, runout, and composite tolerances

  • Complex Part Setup and Fixturing
    • Designing and using custom fixtures for irregular parts
    • Strategies for minimizing measurement uncertainty due to fixturing
    • Using modular fixturing systems effectively
  • Advanced Probe and Tooling Techniques
    • Using multi-stylus probe systems and probe changers
    • Understanding probe qualification for complex measurement paths
    • Techniques for minimizing probe deflection and stylus wear
  • CMM Programming for Complex Inspections
    • Writing and modifying parametric measurement routines
    • Using advanced alignment strategies (best-fit, iterative alignments)
    • Automating inspection of large batches and variant parts
    • Using CAD models to create offline programs
  • Advanced Data Analysis and Reporting
    • Applying statistical process control (SPC) to CMM results
    • Analyzing measurement trends and process capability
    • Generating advanced reports with ballooned drawings and trend charts
    • Integrating CMM data with quality management systems (QMS)
  • Measurement Strategies for Complex Geometries
    • Measuring freeform surfaces and contours
    • Using scanning probes and continuous data collection
    • Comparing scanned data to nominal CAD geometry (point cloud analysis)
