A Hub for Innovation
Our Story
The story of the Allegheny Lab for Innovation and Creativity (ALIC) began in 2019 when Allegheny College established the original ALIC in Doane Hall of Art. Designed as a multidisciplinary teaching and research space, ALIC @ Doane provided degree-seeking students with hands-on experience in fabrication tools and emerging technologies, all within the framework of a liberal arts education.
As ALIC expanded, it introduced entrepreneurship grants, industry-focused courses, microcredentials, and a partnership with the NWPA Beehive Innovation Network. When industry partners began inquiring about enrolling their employees in ALIC courses, a new idea emerged: a branch of ALIC dedicated to integrating technical education with the critical thinking and creative problem-solving strengths of a liberal arts foundation—one designed to serve the broader community.
From that vision, ALIC @ Bessemer was born.
In the months and years ahead, we will continue to expand our course offerings, microcredentials, and technological capabilities while launching our Use-Inspired Research Labs and Startup Studio.

Our Method
ILIC @ Bessemer is dedicated to serving the community by bridging the gap between industry needs and workforce development. The process begins with assessing industry training needs through direct engagement with local businesses to identify skill gaps and emerging technological demands. Once a need is established, ALIC collaborates with industry professionals, onboarding them as instructors to bring real-world expertise into the classroom. Simultaneously, the necessary equipment is procured to ensure hands-on, practical learning experiences.
Under the leadership of the instructor, ALIC then designs a curriculum that aligns with both industry standards and the liberal arts foundation of critical thinking and problem-solving. Within just two months, the course is launched, providing local professionals and students with cutting-edge skills that directly contribute to regional economic growth and innovation.
