PLC 1 – Fundamentals

This course provides a foundational overview of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) used in industrial automation. Students will learn about PLC hardware components, basic programming concepts using ladder logic, input/output configuration, and troubleshooting techniques. Hands-on exercises focus on designing, programming, and testing simple control systems to develop essential skills for manufacturing and process automation.

  • Overview of PLCs and Their Role in Manufacturing

    • Purpose and advantages of PLCs in industrial automation

    • Comparison with traditional relay-based control systems

  • PLC Hardware Components

    • Central processing unit (CPU)

    • Input/output (I/O) modules

    • Power supplies and communication ports

    • Sensors and actuators

  • Basic Electrical Concepts for PLCs

    • DC and AC voltage basics

    • Wiring diagrams and ladder logic interpretation

    • Safety procedures when working with electrical systems

  • Introduction to PLC Programming

    • Programming languages with a focus on ladder logic

    • Basic instructions: contacts, coils, timers, counters

    • Boolean logic operations

  • PLC Software and Interface

    • Use of industry-standard PLC programming software

    • Downloading and uploading programs to PLCs

    • Monitoring and troubleshooting programs in real time

  • Input/Output Configuration and Addressing

    • Digital vs analog inputs and outputs

    • Assigning and referencing I/O addresses in ladder logic

  • Basic Troubleshooting and Diagnostics

    • Interpreting error codes and status indicators

    • Using software tools to identify and fix common faults

  • Simple Control Applications

    • Developing and testing programs for basic operations like motor control, conveyors, and sensors

    • Hands-on practice with simulations and/or lab equipment
